The provisional 15-member Indian squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 is set to be announced on Tuesday, September 5, during a press conference at India’s Asia Cup 2023 camp in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Leading up to this significant revelation, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has revealed his own 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming quadrennial event. Interestingly, Gambhir has omitted Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur, two players who were widely expected to be part of India’s World Cup team.
During an interaction on Star Sports, Gambhir was asked whether the squad he has chosen for the 2023 ODI World Cup would consist only of players currently involved in the 2023 Asia Cup. In response, he stated:
“Washington Sundar is included in my squad. I have selected six batters, four all-rounders, and five specialist bowlers in my squad. My six batters are Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan.”
The 2011 World Cup winner mentioned that he would not include pace all-rounder Shardul Thakur and instead opt for four specialized seamers.
“The four all-rounders in my squad are Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Then, there are five bowlers, including four proper fast bowlers who are part of the current (Asia Cup) squad, along with Kuldeep Yadav.”
